How to Treat Hemophilia

How to Treat Hemophilia

Hemophilia is a rare condition that needs effective and immediate treatment to manage the symptoms, such as clotting, uncontrolled bleeding, pain, and swelling. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and age of the patient. Treating hemophilia requires a team of specialists including surgeons, therapists, and dentists that would primarily work on this blood clotting disorder issue. The overall hemophilia diagnosis and treatment is to give the body VIII factor that it cannot make.

Treatments for hemophilia can include the following methods:

1. A team of medical professionals
To start with, a patient with this medical condition needs good and proficient doctors and nurses who have treated hemophilia in the past. A comprehensive care center is much needed that will connect all the dots to correct the situation or better control the symptoms.

2. Replacement therapy
The main treatment is replacing the clotting factor that the body needs through a tube. This is known as the replacement therapy that focuses on controlling bleeding and needs constant monitoring to avoid bleeding episodes. Donated blood is also used in this therapy to replace the clotting factor.

3. Recombinant clotting factors
Also, recombinant clotting factors products are used to treat hemophilia and to add on to this, these are not made of human blood but manufactured in a laboratory.

4. Desmopressin
When it’s a case of mild hemophilia, desmopressin hormone is commonly used to help the body to release more of the clotting factor. It acts as a stimulating agent that is either given through a vein or may be used as a nasal spray.

5. Fibrin sealants
There are certain clot-preserving medications prescribed by the doctor to help prevent clots from breaking down. Since this medical condition can result in bruises and open wounds, Fibrin Sealants are directly applied to the concerned area to help in clotting and healing. This medication is often used in dental therapies too.

6. Bandages and ice packs
When a patient bleeds, bandages and pressure are applied to manage the bleeding. An ice pack is also a huge relief when the bleeding is under the skin. Additionally one can also try ice pops only if there are issues in the dental region.

7. Vaccinations
One must consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B to avoid contracting diseases.

8. Prophylaxis
Most of the hemophilia treatment is prophylaxis, managing bleeding episodes, treating the factor VIII (FVIII) inhibitors with the use of medications, replacement products, and pain therapy or medications. Prophylaxis is widely used to reduce the chances of damaging target places in the body such as joints.

This treatment should be conducted in the hospital and might take 3 sessions a week. In case the joints bleed and develop synovitis, radioisotopes are injected into the joint to reduce bleeding, prevent any bone damage and arthropathy. It’s widely recommended that post-treatment, monitoring must be done regularly to avoid any further bleeding and fracture.

You must seek a good hemophilia treatment center that is not just limited to the diagnosis and treatment but one that provides care and education to patients during the course of treatment.
